Perhaps I'm having a complete breakdown here, but shouldn't JOIN ON and JOIN USING produce the same results, given the same fields?

e.g.

SELECT * FROM racks r join rack_positions p on (r.rack_id=p.rack_id);//46 rows
SELECT * FROM racks r join rack_positions p using (rack_id);//zero rows

So why don't the above queries produce the same result? (I just bet I'm going to smack myself for not figuring this out.)

Strangely, closing the connection and reopening it seems to have fixed the issue. I hope this doesn't mean the db is somehow corrupt. –  dnagirl Nov 3 '10 at 10:57

According to SQL-92 the join results should be almost identical. The only difference being the USING syntax should return a result with the first column named rack_id, while the ON syntax should return the rack_id columns from both tables.
