hello I have the following win32 program, and I have an EDITTEXT control that doesn't show up on the screen. There is meant to be two EDITTEXT controls drawn on the main window, but only one shows, why is this?

The message text window doesn't have the same style flags as the first. Specifically, it is missing WS_VISIBLE. This could well be your problem.

It was a mistake unfortunately, wasn't paying much attention when I was writing it. have only recently started learning the API :). –  silent Dec 1 '10 at 6:17

Did you call InitCommonControlsEx() before creating your edit windows? Does CreateWindow() return a valid HWND?

-1. InitCommonControlsEx() has nothing with edit control. Edit control is implemented in user32 not comctl32. –  Xearinox Aug 3 '13 at 17:14
    
@Xearinox: The edit control is implemented in both user32 and comctl32‌​. Even if that were not the case, calling InitCommonControlsEx() with the ICC_STANDARD_CLASSES flag set states that it will "load one of the intrinsic User32 control classes. The user controls include button, edit, static, listbox, combobox, and scroll bar" It is appropriate to use this function to load the edit control, especially if you want visual styles. –  In silico Aug 3 '13 at 23:38

@Xearinox: Did you take a look at the MSDN documentation I linked? Comctl32 is included in Windows XP, and the docs make a note specifically for Windows XP that the edit control exists in both user32 and comctl32 and have slightly different behavior (namely the appearance of the password character). –  In silico Aug 4 '13 at 1:51

Have you initialize the controls before load it with InitCommonControlsEx? Try this code one.

    InitCommonControlsEx(&iccx);

Remember to include header commctrl.h and library comctl32.dll
