Does anyone have a good guide/explanation of Batcher's Merge-Exchange Sort?

This is not the same algorithm as Batcher's bitonic sort or Batcher's odd-even merge sort, though many articles pretend that it is.

As I recall, that section gave the algorithm and a proof of correctness, but no intuition of how it works or how it came someone came up with it. –  user108088 Dec 9 '10 at 21:14

Knuth gives a geometric interpretation in terms of repeated folding of a grid (see page 113). This might assist your intuition. Also, I added Batcher's original paper to my answer; and if that fails to help you, why not ask the man himself? –  Gareth Rees Dec 9 '10 at 21:26

R = 0, D = P
for Q = 2T-1, 2T-2, 2T-3, ..., P do
for (K = 1 to N - D ) and ((K-1)   P) = R do in parallel
if A[K] > A[K + D] then
swap(A[K], A[K + D ])
end if
end for
D = Q - P
R = P
end for
end for


(K + 1)   P means logical and of K and P

If number of processors is less than N than the swap becomes a merge
