i need a regular expression to capture a given URLs SLD.

Examples:

jack.bop.com -> bop
bop.com -> bop
bop.de -> bop
bop.co.uk -> bop
bop.com.br -> bop

All bops :). So this regex needs to ignore ccTLDs, gTLDs and ccSLDs. The latter is the difficult part, since i wanna keep the regex as un-complex as possible.

The first task would be to remove ccTLDs then gTLDs, and then check for ccSLDs and remove them if present.

Any help is much appreciated :)

If it helps, ccTLDs are matched by:

\.([a-z]{2})$

And gTLDs are matched by:

\.([a-z]{3-6})$

Luckily it's two mutually exclusive patterns.

Technically, '.co.uk' is the second level domain in 'bop.co.uk'. What you seem to be asking for is the highest level part of the domain that was open to public registration. I don't know if there's really a good name for that. It certainly isn't very well defined.

To find the thing you want you'd have to enumerate all of the "not open to public registration" suffixes. You should probably order these from longest to shortest, to handle cases like 'www.british-library.uk'. After that, the regex is pretty simple:

(.+\.)?([^.]+)\.(?:<suffixes>)$

Where <suffixes> would be your | separated list of suffixes. A piece of it would look like:

gov\.uk|ac\.uk|co\.uk|com|org|net|us|uk

Again, you want to order these longest first (more precisely the real constraint is you want elements that are suffixes of other elements to appear later -- ordering longest first is an easy way to meet that constraint).

You may be able to find a the list of domains you care about by researching how cookie domains are handled by web browsers. I seem to recall that browsers do some special casing to ensure that you can't have cookies that exist for all of co.uk.
