I am new to spring I am trying to create a Database Manager page which shows the database details on page load and updates the database settings when the user press submit

I followed this tutorial and set the database settings in properties file.

I managed to update the database settings in properties file programmatically. When I retrieved the database settings using the following code

DriverManagerDataSource databaseSource = (DriverManagerDataSource)context.getBean("dataSource");
databaseSource.getUsername();

I managed to get the old value and unable to get the new value

This is the mapping in applicationContext.xml file

Just making my requirement simple. I am creating a setparate dbsettings page, so that when user wishes to connect to different database he/she can just enter the details in dbsettings page and connect

If I change it into AbstractApplicationContext what change do I need in the above code?

context.refresh() refreshes the whole applicationContext beans I thought. Ok now I removed those delgate and service in between and the application now calls straight

I am not using DBSettingsDelegate now

@Sean Sorry for not making my question clear. I created a dbsettings page where user can enter which database they want to connect to. To achieve this I need to update database settings programmatically. So I tried the steps above –  mvg Dec 25 '10 at 12:13

You need to refresh your Application context and get the bean DriverManagerDataSource again in order to reflect the changes written to propertie files.

context.refresh();
DriverManagerDataSource databaseSource = (DriverManagerDataSource)context.getBean("dataSource");
databaseSource.getUsername();

Tip for getting File object of your resource:

    URI a = getClass().getResource("/com/smartcall/bundle/database.properties").toURI();
    File file = new File(a);

You will not need to decode the path, i.e. replacing %20 with " ". Referrence

Is the error being thrown at the line context.refresh()? It does not seem like it is being thorwn at that line. Can you check what is your line 41, 49 in DbSettingsBean.java and line 38 in DbSettingsDelegate.java? those are where the error is thrown. Did you get some other bean from the context too? if so, you will need to get it again. If you need more help, please show me your DbSettingsBean.java and DbSettingsBean.java. –  gigadot Dec 27 '10 at 12:20

Your applicationContext.xml does not contain only those two beans, right? It also have the the definition of dbSettingsService? If you get any bean from the context somewhere else, when you call the refresh method the referrences to the beans elsewhere will not be updated. –  gigadot Dec 27 '10 at 15:46

The values are read when the application is started, they are set to the target objects (the data source in your case), and the properties file is no longer being read. So even if you change the values, they are not reflected anywhere.

For the PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer to reload the values you'd have to extend it and specify a reload period. But that still won't update the data source. You should also extend the data source class and make it re-read properties after a given interval. Or you can declare the DataSource to be of scope prototype, so that a new instance is obtained.each time, and the properties - reloaded.

This is if you don't want to restart the whole context (which might take a lot of time)

+1 for the explanation. I don't want to reload properties file at the specified interval. I just want to reflect the changes immediateley after the user update database setting. Regarding the 2nd point do I need to update applicationcontext file with this <bean id="dataSource" class="org.springframework.jdbc.datasource.DriverManagerDataSource" scope="prototype"> I did that but no success –  mvg Dec 25 '10 at 13:05
    
Have you tried refreshing your context? Since your context is small, you may not need to worry about taking a lot of time. –  gigadot Dec 25 '10 at 13:16

@mvg I have never used it this way. My suggestion is to check what is the runtime type of your context object using debug tools. If it is an AbstractApplicationContext or any derived class of AbstractApplicationContext, you can change its type. –  gigadot Dec 25 '10 at 13:27
    
According to Spring API, all implemented WebApplicationContext classes should be derived from AbstractApplicationContext. I would say it is safe to change the field type to AbstractApplicationContext. –  gigadot Dec 25 '10 at 13:37
