I have a class named error_code. I use it as key for std::map and CMap (MFC). I am able to make it work for std::map, but not CMap. May I know how I can do so?

A quick trace shows that template function belows is causing the error :

template<class ARG_KEY>
    // default identity hash - works for most primitive values
    return (DWORD)(((DWORD_PTR)key)>>4);

A quick fix would involve adding implicit conversion function to the user-defined type. I'm not sure what data will be stored so just randomly pick some attribute to form the required data.

if the value picked results in similar hash everytime, you just get bad container performance since everything stored in same bucket. –  YeenFei Jan 4 '11 at 9:14

std::map is usually implemented as a red black tree on most STL implementations. CMap uses hash tables so a specific hash is required to hash for your class.

I believe providing a conversion as suggested by YeenFei could introduce subtle bugs to other parts of your code. Perhaps a safer approach would be to specialize the HashKey function as shown below:

 return (UINT)(long)e.hi ^ (UINT)e.lo;

I believe using the bitwise OR as above will satisfy your concerns about hash collision raised on the answer posted by YeenFei –  Coda Jan 4 '11 at 9:34
