In my game I need a stopwatch to measure and show the elapsed time.

For this purpose I made a simple widget:

But when I run my game the CPU usage is at about 13% on a 2,5Ghz i5. I know this is not problematic but it sure is ridiculous for a stupid clock.

Am I doing it completely wrong or is this common practice ?!

Do you know which function in particular is causing the spike in CPU time? Can you profile your code, etc? –  chrisaycock Jan 5 '11 at 1:49
    
I'm absolutely sure that this stopwatch widget is causing the issue. Profiling only yields that the method ml_set_interrupts_enabled (mach kernel) is predominant. I guess these are the timeout signals send by the timer. This clock has a precision of a ms, but still 1000 interrupts a second isn't that cpu intensive is it ? (My 15 year old casio watch can do it for a year on the smallest of batteries) –  user558802 Jan 5 '11 at 2:06

Start(1) sets the timer to trigger every millisecond

You then want to format a string and print it on the screen 16times faster than the screen is probably updating anyway
