I have 2 entities Customer & Adress as follows: Customer.java

I have tried with adding @NotNull to both sides.optional = false in the @OneToOne & unique = true, nullable = false in @JoinColumn but nothing has worked.

Pl. help.

I think, make nullable=true or set objects from both the side, like cutomer.setAddress(addr) and address.setCustomer(cust). –  nIKUNJ Jan 28 '11 at 4:07

I believe this is currently a limitation within Hibernate (it's not actually persisting a null value to the DB since you are using JoinTable but it thinks that it is). We've been able to not pull the nullable/optional flags in the entity but instead enforce non-nullability in the database schema itself. It's less than ideal but it works and you do get referential integrity (you can add a prePersist and postLoad listener to make sure you don't even attempt the DB write).

So bi-directional one-to-one association using join table & employing @OneToOne is not possible in hibernate.We have go for JoinColumn ie foreign key association or shared primary key. –  Subhendu Mahanta Jan 28 '11 at 10:32

FK wouldn't work since you would see a chicken and egg problem in the DB (which entity do you save first?). Shared primary key should work. Again, bi-directional one-to-one association using join table & @OneToOne works in hibernate, you just can't declare them non-null in code (but only in the DB). –  Clement P Jan 28 '11 at 21:17

Sure, I know for sure that bi-directional one to one mapping works in hibernate with the proper schema, if you want a uni-directional mapping, i.e. Address may or may not have a unique customer tied to it, you can certainly do it. Your answer does not enforce nullable=false and if you try it, hibernate would complain. –  Clement P Jan 29 '11 at 13:24

I think this situation would be better handled by setting the Address as an embeddable object, but that's your choice.

But anyway, it's quite possible to map a @OneToOne with a @JoinTable. You just need to do it in two steps. See this code:

This code will generate these SQL instructions:

Hibernate: insert into CustomerAddress (address_id, id) values (?, ?)

Have a look again at my example about the business method (in your case, Launch5_6A). Persist the customer first, then set the customer to the address, then persist address. Also, keep your question clean, currently it's very hard to follow with so many boiler-plate code and duplicate examples... –  jpkrohling Jan 30 '11 at 8:45
