I'm using libxml2 and libxslt to process XML files. The return value is of type instance but I need to have a UTF-8 static string.

styledoc = libxml2.parseFile(style_file)
style = libxslt.parseStylesheetDoc(styledoc)
doc = libxml2.parseDoc(xml_data.encode("UTF-8")) 
html = style.applyStylesheet(doc)

return html # <- this has to be a utf-8 static string

How could I convert the return value to a static string?

So not unicode, then. I edited to that effect. What is a "static string"? There is nothing in python like c's "static". –  Lennart Regebro Jan 28 '11 at 11:32
    
I am not sura if it works because i did not try it before,but using Pickle functions migth work, which parse an object to a string and parse it back to its original form... –  FallenAngel Jan 28 '11 at 11:37

Use

return style.saveResultToString(html)

Instead of return html

Here is xml and xslt test files I used, and my test codes

you may decode it with .decode("utf-8") if you suspect it is not utf8

There should be methods for this in the library. If not you have to write them yourself, which probably is not trivial. Unfortunately I can't find any useful docs for the Python bindings, so I understand if you can't find this out.

You might want to look at lxml, a module that uses the same c libraries, but has an API that is compatible with ElementTree.
