I have two entities:

public class Product
{
    public virtual ICollection<Category> Categories { get; protected set; }

    public Product()
    {
        Categories = new HashSet<Category>();
    }
}

public class Category
{
    public virtual IEnumerable<Product> Products { get; protected set; }

    public Category()
    {
        Products = new HashSet<Product>();
    }
}

A Product can have many Categories, and a Category can be assigned to many Products. Although this relationship can be represented as a uni-directional many-to-many, I wanted to ability to delete a Category and have NHibernate automatically remove that category from all Products as well, something that NHibernate can't do if the relationship is only uni-directional.

I have the two classes mapped like this in Fluent NHibernate:

public class ProductMap : ClassMap<Product>
{
    HasManyToMany(x => x.Categories).AsSet();
}

public class CategoryMap : ClassMap<Category>
{
    HasManyToMany(x => x.Products).AsSet().Inverse();
}

However, whenever I try to save a new Category, I get the following exception:

ArgumentNullException: Collection cannot be null. Parameter name: c

I pinpointed the issue to the collection type of Category.Products. If I change it to a List, it works fine, but if I make it a HashSet, it throws the exception. Why can't both sides of a bi-directional relationship be HashSet, and why does the inverse side have to be the non-HashSet? I tried keeping Category.Products as a HashSet and I changed Product.Categories to a List, but I still get the same exception.

Why is one of your collections ICollection while the other is IEnumerable? –  James Gregory Jan 29 '11 at 21:04
    
Product.Categories is the side that controls the relationship. If the user uses Category.Products.Add() to assign a Category to a Product, NHib won't save the relationship. I'm forcing them to use Product.Categories.Add() instead by making Category.Products an IEnumerable. –  Daniel T. Jan 31 '11 at 0:37
