I have a Java TCP server and an Android TCP client. The server waits for requests and then sends 50MB of data to the Android client (who reads by looping an array and overwriting the data, so the data is not saved on the phone.) Everything works fine and dandy but at random times the client crashes with this:

java.net.SocketException: Connection timed out

and the server gets this:

java.net.SocketException: connection reset

The client reads in a loop until it has received all the data (the maximum I allow it to read in one call is 1.5MB.

The server sends like this:

connectionSocket.getOutputStream().write(new byte[1024*1024*10*5]);

I am looping the client and trying to do this transfer 5-10 times so I can take battery life measurements but I rarely get 3 successful completions of the 50MB transfer. I am really at a loss... the setup I have is really quite simple. I am willing to post code if it will help.

There are various reasons why the connection drops, ranging from the infrastructure (as Dan pointed out) to the device going to sleep. You might want to try requesting a wakelock and see if this helps. Also, by randomly pressing the touch screen to keep the device from sleeping could see if this is sleep-related.

On the other hand, if you just catch the Exception and immediately reconnect and retry, your measurements shouldn't be off by too much. You might also want to try UDP instead of TCP (no timeouts possible). Be sure to monitor if the throughput drops though.

Hi, I was hoping you could expand on the wakelock? Android is new to me. I have the client do longish sleeps (2-7 seconds) that puts the activity to sleep and I am hoping also puts the wifi radio to sleep. This is where I am trying to conserve energy. Is it possible to request this wake lock without it keeping the wifi awake? –  Michael Feb 6 '11 at 18:51
No, a wakelock is exactly the opposite. You ask the system to stay awake and not go to sleep. If the radio goes to sleep the connection shouldn't suffer, but I wouldn't bet on this. This could also depend on the handset and Android version. To be honest I'm still a little confused by what you want to accomplish though :) Anyway, its good style to be ready to reconnect when a connection fails, but if this is only a benchmark/test then its probably overkill and beside the point. I am trying to save energy during longer data transfers by allowing the radio to sleep during the transfer.Think of it like you have two buffers, the TCP buffer and an app buffer. You fill the app buffer up then put the then stop reading from TCP, eventually the TCP buffer fills up then the radio can go to sleep... when the app buffer runs low then it reads everything from the TCP buffer. Unfortunately I cannot seem to get a 500MB transfer to complete. I am trying a wakelock now, and if it leaves the screen on that is fine, but if it prevents the wifi from sleeping that is a problem. –  Michael Feb 6 '11 at 20:49
I don't think that the radio really goes to sleep in that sense (at least it shouldn't). It still has to react to incoming IP packets. It will use most power while sending, but its probably better to send the stuff quickly than to have to power the transmitter for a longer duration. As long as wifi is activated system-wide, it will always listen for incoming data, so pausing will not save energy. No, a wakelock is not what you want when you want to conserve energy. –  Kevin Read Feb 6 '11 at 21:02

I was experiencing the same problem, as I do a heavy data download that takes over 10 minutes. When the device went to sleep I got the java.net.SocketException: Connection timed out.

I tried the solution stated by @Michael, using a WakeLock during the download. That not fixed the full problem for me, because if the user pressed the power button I was experiencing the same issue. If it was not pressed that worked because you were preventing Android to sleep with the WakeLock and Wifi was not turned off...

Finally, I came across that the problem was not the CPU sleeping it was that wifi is switched off when the screen turns off. So I used a WifiLock and that fixed the problem!

My code to work with WakeLocks look like (of course, I do the actual work in an AsyncTask -take it as pseudocode-):

WifiLock wifiLock = wifiManager.createWifiLock("long_download");
// Do the heavy work in background

You will need the following permission in your AndroidManifest:

Just guessing, but I don't think it's your code; I think it's a network issue. I've known some WiFi routers (*cough* Linksys *cough*) that had trouble handling that much data at one time. Try disabling WiFi and testing with 3G. Or, since your purpose is to test battery life and not throughput, try breaking up the data writes into smaller chunks, with a brief pause between each chunk (say, 100K chunks, with delays of somewhere around 10 to 100 ms.) This may skew your test results a bit, but you can account for that easily enough by factoring in the battery consumption during the total duration of those (presumably idle) pauses.

Hi Dan, I throttled the server back to 250KB/s by sending 12.5KB is 50ms intervals. I also have the client reading at 160KB/s and I am still crashing (reads a lot then sleeps for 7 seconds). Now I am thinking the problem it is on the client side because the client is now throwing the exception long before the server does. –  Michael Feb 6 '11 at 18:47
@Michael: Just to clarify, did you try a test with the server throttled back, but without any change in the client (i.e., the client pulling data from the socket as quickly as possible)? Also, are the exceptions still the same? How long does it take for the server to throw an exception? –  Dan Breslau Feb 6 '11 at 22:00
Yeah Server throttled back and Client reading at full speed still throws an exception (at the client). The client throws a "Connection timed out" exception, and then a few "Network Unreachable" exceptions. The server, several minutes after the client throws its exceptions now just throws a "No route to host" exception but no longer crashes at the same time as the client. The wakelock that was suggested by kread prevents the exceptions under all situations but as kread mentioned that wakelock is bad. I was hoping to isolate the wifi radio for my measurements. –  Michael Feb 7 '11 at 5:07
