I have two tables: #tmpParams, which lists 29 combinations of Disability and Grade. The 2nd table, #tmpSource contains many students with their StudentID, Disability, and Grade. I need to select 29 random rows from #tmpSource, joining on #tmpParams by Disability and Grade.

In other words, someone handed me a list of parameters for 29 students (Disability and Grade) and they want 29 random students from #tmpSource, including StudentID, matching on the two fields.

This is the DDL:

That populates 29 students into #tmpParams and 62 into #tmpSource. My real-world scenario is, of course, much more complex.

I can get 29 random students from #tmpSource easily enough...but how do I JOIN on #tmpParams to get 29 students that match on the two fields?

I may be missing something but why not

That matches, but isn't an exact match. I may not have been clear. In the results set, I'd want an exact match for the 29 students, by Disability and Grade. So, for example, I'd need: 1 student: 08 - SL/Grade 1; 1 student: 11 - PSD/Grade 1; 2 students: 04 - SLD/Grade 2; etc. -- but thank you for your help! –  Daniel Feb 17 '11 at 16:54
    
For your second query, it's very helpful -- I think it's getting close to what I need. However, when I run it, for any combination of Disability and Grade, the result is that student ID multiple times. For example, there are four rows in #tmpParams where the combination is 04-SLD/Grade 5. With this query, I get the same student ID returned from #tmpSource for all four rows. I was hoping to get a different student returned for each of the 29 rows in #tmpParams. –  Daniel Feb 17 '11 at 17:26
    
my answer should have no duplicates whatsoever. When there is not enough studens with characteristics, the query will return what is avaialble. Changing it to return warning if not enough records are available is straightforward –  luckyluke Feb 17 '11 at 23:13

Basically it does calculate number of buckets and number of matches then randomizes each group (if this is perfomance heavy You might loop join it with only the categoriez that are need in the rownumedStuds to randomize only groups You need.

the actual select I hope is pretty straighforward
