I've only fairly recently begun working with zip files in java. All seems to be going to plan pretty well so far but I have got one last roadblock: nested zips.

I'm trying to search for files with a particular extension so they can be read as text files. So far I can quite happily read files inside zip file but I know that there are some files inside zips nested inside other zips.

Is there a way to search create a ZipFile object out of a ZipEntry without needing to decompress the file?

No code sample since it's not directly a code problem.

Without warrenty: this article stated to process nested ZIP's and i see a recursive call to findZip().

ZipInputStream wraps a stream in a filter that unzips the data. So when you find a ZipEntry that's a nested zip file, you need to wrap the stream you're using in a new ZipInputStream to translate the data. This can be done to whatever depth you need.

Sure. You do not need a ZipFile. Create ZipInputStream that reads stuff from ZipEntry of outer file.

You need the ZipFile to be able to call the zipfile.getInputStream(ZipEntry entry) method. if I took the inputStream of a ZipEntry sure I could wrap it in a ZipInputStream and find sub ZipEntries, but could I then get input streams for those sub zips in order to read them? –  K.Barad Feb 22 '11 at 8:37

I wrote some code to read files from zips as if they were virtual folders, you're welcome to take a look at this, and get an idea of how it works. Now, when you say "without decompressing" that's not possible, but I assume you mean "without decompressing it to disk". This code does decompress it, but it does it in memory, not on disk.
