I'm trying to getting run the following SQL statement:

SELECT
    q1.ORDERID, q1.LINE, q1.HOURS,
    q1.HOURS  / (
        SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Query3 q2 WHERE q2.ORDERID = q1.ORDERID
    )
FROM Query3 q1;

But the query cause the error 3072, described here.

Googling about the above error, I think it is because the comparison between different types (or something else I cannot see). So playing with the query, I discovered that the following query runs correctly:

SELECT
    q1.ORDERID, q1.LINE, q1.HOURS,
    q1.HOURS  / (
        SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Query3 q2 WHERE q2.ORDERID = "4000"
    )
FROM Query3 q1;

but the following one don't (raise the error on title):

SELECT
    q1.ORDERID, q1.LINE, q1.HOURS,
    q1.HOURS  / (
        SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Query3 q2 WHERE "4000" = q1.ORDERID
    ) AS Expr1
FROM Query3 q1;

Before this advice, I tried to convert subquery values in the following way:

CLng(Nz(q1.HOURS)) /
(SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Query3 q2 WHERE CStr(Nz(q2.ORDERID), "")) = CStr(Nz(q2.ORDERID, "")))

But I had no luck...

ORDERID and LINE have string types; HOUR have integer type. The environment running the SQL query is Access 2007.

Query3 is derived from Query2, which is derived from Query1. Many tables are involved. The problem is caused by the complex database structure, I think; I tried to execute those queries on simpler database and everything runs correctly.

What would cause that error?

So, the source tables are ORDINI and ORDINI RIGHE, which are defined as String type, allowing NULL values.

Did you try to validate the NULL values into ORDERID ? Try to filter those values to avoid comparing NULL. Maybe your database is corrupted. Try to compact and repair it (Tools - Compact and Repair) et retry your query. –  Nico Feb 25 '11 at 2:07

Your original query runs correctly for me with simple test data. I'm guessing the problem is buried in Query3 (or maybe even further down). Posting the contents of Query3 would be helpful (in fact, I don't know how else we could help you). –  mwolfe02 Feb 25 '11 at 14:56
    
My simple test data included nulls in both the ORDERID and HOURS fields and the query still ran correctly. –  mwolfe02 Feb 25 '11 at 14:58

My assumption is that Hours is an integer & am assuming that COUNT(*) will return as integer. An integer divided by integer will return an integer. The resultant value for some case could not be accommodated in an integer variable.

For e.g. 200 / 9

Hence, converting the Hours to double using CDbl will force the query to return result in Double data type.

Not sure, try this...

I think the issue is that the count returns 0, have it replaced by 1
