How can I most easily find out the point in my code where this (i.e. "Program received signal: EXC_BAD_ACCESS") is being triggered?

When I get this and I look in the console I don't see any additional info such as a stack trace in this case. I know I can put breakpoints through the code and try to step through to find, however if there is a way to more easily find out without lots of breakpoints and step through that would be great.

EDIT 1 - Re typing backtrace in (re this answer), I see this, which doesn't seem to quite highlight the point in my code?

That's easy: NSZombies. The tricky ones are the SIGABRTs. :( –  user142019 Feb 28 '11 at 0:37

Try using NSZombies in Instruments. There is an Apple WWDC video on how to use it. That should help you identify where it is coming from.

NSZombieEnabled will most likely help you find most over-released bugs. From CocoaDev:

Use in Xcode:
  Double-click an executable in the Executables group of your Xcode project.
  Click the Arguments tab.
  In the "Variables to be set in the environment:" section, make a variable called "NSZombieEnabled" and set its value to "YES".

For particularly nasty cases (a nasty over-autorelease bug in my case) some additional flags like NSDebugEnabled, MallocStackLogging, and MallocStackLoggingNoCompact will help you examine the retain/release history for any variable. thanks helping a bit ACBurk - I got the following - I don't think it told we where exactly in the code however? (although the extra info helps me guess where it would be). Here's what I see: "2011-02-28 10:53:48.595 myApp[99384:207] *** -[__NSArrayM count]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x5b26150". So I'm guessing it might be the numberOfRowsInSection method... –  Greg Feb 28 '11 at 0:58

Use GDB's backtrace command (type 'backtrace' in the console). This will print out the entire stack up until the crash.

Alright, I though you did not have any stack trace, not one that is ambiguous. In that case, as the other commenters have suggested, NSZombies should help you track down the issue. You are over releasing an object somewhere and NSZombies can help you find where. –  Matt Bierner Feb 28 '11 at 0:48

There are a few things you can do to hlep trace memory issues.

  1. In some cases, you can use the debugger. Command + Shift + Y

  2. You can use NSZombieEnabled.

  3. You can use "Build and Analyze" from the Build menu.
