I can not retrieve the two properties in one call with a select on a composite embeddable key table. I am grabbing the count first, then paging. Same logic is being used everywhere else throughout the site. I get the error below with the query. Really lost here.

You can't create a subcriteria on an embedded object. Creating a subcriteria maps to adding a join to the SQL query. You don't create joins on embedded fields.

Also, please use constants rather than magic values for your join types :

criteria.createCriteria("ub.badge", "b", Criteria.LEFT_JOIN);

is much more readable than

criteria.createCriteria("ub.badge", "b", 1);

You haven't shown us your entities and their relationships, but his code might work better:

Criteria criteria = userBadgeRepository.getCritieria(); // sic

criteria.createCriteria("userBadgePK.badge", "b", Criteria.INNER_JOIN); 
// you don't have foreign keys pointing to nowhere, have you? 
// So an INNER join is preferred here
criteria.createCriteria("userBadgePK.user", "u", Criteria.INNER_JOIN);

I even have @ManyToOne(fetch=FetchType.EAGER), and it isn't pulling it. –  Mike Flynn Mar 2 '11 at 23:26
