I have a WPF application that is constantly animating. One interaction (mouseup) and animation in particular seems to freeze the UI thread for long enough to be very noticable.

Concurrency Visualizer shows me my UI thread is blocked for 300 - 500ms. It also shows the stack while it's blocked and the unblocking stack:

I've read SyncFlush() is called after several MilCore functions and appears to cause the changes that have been sent to be processed immediately (credit to Ray Burns).

I'd like to get rid of this freeze, but I'm also hoping to develop a better understanding of what WPF is doing in this situation so that I can build a better mental model of how WPF works.

From the back and forth stack traces it's obvious that the main thread is waiting on something to fully flush. I have no idea though what a SyncFlush is or how you'd work around it.

Looking at the long IO stack trace the issue is possibly the Nvidia driver. WPF (wpfgfx_v0400) is calling into DirectX 9 (d3d9) which is calling into the Nvidia driver (nvd3dumx).

Now it's possible that all of the platforms are behaving appropriately and are doing what your code is telling them to do. It's also possible that there could be a bug in WPF, DirectX 9, or the Nvidia driver. Most of the time though the issue is with the calling code.

I'm assuming that this application as a mouse-up event handler. If so, looking at what that's doing (or how it interferes with the animation) will be the most likely source of the performance issue.

When you UI thread is blocking, it's usually because some operation you are executing on the event is not being run in it's own thread. I'd say to check the mouseup event for a long running operation that can be shoved off to a background thread and allow the UI thread to be free to dispatch other events.

The giant stack trace is almost useless in determining what your true problem is.

Tejs, I'm a bit confused. Does this mean I should not trust Concurrency Visualizer? It showed me a 500ms task, classified it as synchronization, showed a stack containing WaitForSingleObject, and pointed to the thread that was being waited on. You seem to be indicating that the problem is not synchronization, and is in fact a long running task taking place on the main thread. Unless I misunderstand you, this is completely counter to Concurrency Visualizer's indication. –  Tristan Mar 10 '11 at 22:10
    
Without knowing the code of your mouse up event, it's impossible to say. If the mouse up is indeed using a Wait semaphore, then it sounds like it has threading code that may be blocking the UI thread. So concurrency visualizer is providing you with data, yes. But that data is not really all that useful other than saying a wait operation is blocking the thread. –  Tejs Mar 10 '11 at 22:19
    
If the problem were in the MouseUp event handler, wouldn't I expect to see the MouseUp event handler in the stack under WaitForSingleObject? To confirm it's not the MouseUp handler, I timed execution of the handler and it was <0ms. –  Tristan Mar 10 '11 at 22:38
