I have the following test.xml:

<root>
<A title="A1">
  <B title="B1">
   <C title="C1">
    <params>param=ABC1</params>
    <params>param=ABC2</params>
   </C>
  </B>
</A>
<D title="D1">
  <B title="B2">
   <C title="C2">        
     <params>param=DBC1</params>
     <params>param=DBC2</params>
   </C>
  </B>
</D>
</root>

I need a perl code to parse it and print a report as:

NdeName,  Attribute(s),  Param(s)
A          A1
B          B1
C          C1          param=ABC1 param=ABC2
D          D1
B          B2
C          C2          param=DBC1 param=DBC2  

I have tried using getElementByTagName('param') and getNodeChilds etc... without success. Also, what I have been using was the XML::DOM module.

Here is the code:

Here is example code how to achieve the task with XML::Twig:

First of all, always start with

use strict;
use warnings;

This will catch a lot of typos and stupid mistakes you might make. One big problem you had is that null is not a Perl term. Perl uses undef and the defined function (although in this case you may not need defined, because undef is false and objects are normally true).

Here's a somewhat cleaned up version of your code. It still doesn't produce the output you're asking for, but it's closer.

The suggested code works on my Mac. However, I found out that the system I need to run the script doesn't have LibXML. –  Rowshan Mar 23 '11 at 6:11

I use XML::LibXML, so here's a solution that uses that module.

Update: Still XML::LibXML, but this time without XPaths for ease of converting to XML::DOM.
