i researched this error earlier and it said add the bracket i did that and it's not fixing.

help please.

Which architecture is this, and which assembler? Looks like i386 in Intel/NASM-ish syntax to me (but it's just a small snippet). Which line of code is the error on? In any case you can't do this:

sub byte[iterations], [ebp+16]

You can't do a subtract directly from memory to memory. You have to go through an intermediate register, e.g:

mov eax, [ebp+16]
sub byte[iterations], al

But your error might be referring to another line too.

also u were correct about nasm and intel. but i hope this helps further with the full code. the error is on line 53. "sub byte[iterations], [ebp+16]" and after ur changes i do not get the error. if you don't mind checking the rest of this code for dumb errors like the previous. –  Kevin Strasters Mar 26 '11 at 2:24
    
In x86, for most instructions, at least one of the operands needs to be a register (with some exceptions e.g inc/dec). Your code seems a little "old fashioned" - instructions like 'losdb' and 'stosw' are pretty much deprecated and you'll find "mov al, [esi]; add esi,1" etc are faster (but not as compact in code size). Have a look at Intel or AMD's Optimization Guides (search the developer sites). Also, is there a reason 'iterations' is only a byte? There's no speed advantage to being a byte instead of dword (it's actually slower) and you'll wrap if the inputs are >255. –  John Ripley Mar 26 '11 at 2:42
