I am looking to learn asynchronous programming for quite sometime. I have heard of few examples in file handles with select system call. The other day I was looking at pycon videos and saw a presentation by meebo developer using gevent. I also heard about node.js etc. I tried learning a few times, but never got hold of it. Can someone suggest me a good language and resource to start asynchronous programming?

Most languages can do asynchronous method calls. If you were a bit more specific we'd be able to provide better answers for you. – Johan Sjöberg Mar 30 '11 at 7:58
The simplest approach is to use the Java concurrency libraries, unles syou can get more specific. Can you clarify do you mean [java] or [javascript] as you mention the later in your question? – Peter Lawrey Mar 30 '11 at 8:03

I think that NodeJS is really a good way to do asynchronous programming.

Node.js is an event-driven I/O framework for the V8 JavaScript engine on Unix-like platforms. It is intended for writing scalable network programs such as web servers.

NodeJS is a young framework. But the community is growing at an incredible speed.

Small example in NodeJS :

var http = require('http');
http.createServer(function (req, res) {
  res.writeHead(200, {'Content-Type': 'text/plain'});
  res.end('Hello World\n');
}).listen(8124, "");
console.log('Server running at');

However, if you want a framework more famous, you can use Twisted. Twisted is a event-driven network programming framework written in Python.

Another vote for NodeJS, and I would also add that CoffeeScript makes it even better. CoffeeScript is a big improvement over JavaScript in general, but it is an especially good fit with asynchronous programming, because the syntax for defining anonymous callback functions is so light (and you'll be using a lot of those).

You should also take a look at the Async library for JavaScript, which contains convenience functions for many common asynchronous usage patterns.

Use the shell. You already have a lot of asynchronous programming tools available in your OS.

Write pipelines. They work great.

python a.py | python b.py

Allows two processes to run concurrently. You're doing asynchronous programming and you didn't have to learn anything terribly new or complex. You just need to rethink your problem-solving approach to make use of the resources you already have.

What languages do you know? If you know (or want to learn) javascript I would suggest learning node.js, because javascript's programming model lends itself to asynchronous programming more than the three languages you tagged.

If you want to use python, here is a simple example to get you started. After that read the threading api to learn about the other functions you can call.

I'm not sure that the language matters so much.

Try developing a graphical user interface (GUI) with whatever language (Python, Java) you're familiar with. You'll soon find out that you have to process events in a separate thread than the GUI thread (event thread) if you want your GUI to be responsive to button clicks and text field entry.
