I am very much interested to learn what is NAT and how it works and how to implement the concept?. i have done network programs only inside local LAN but when it comes to real world of internet NAT seems to be very important.

if any body knows please guide me the better way.

See the Wikipedia article on NAT. Basically, the idea is that the NAT box overwrites the source IP address of the packet with the public IP address while keeping a map of the public IP address to the interal IP addresses (often by port) so that incoming traffic can be sent to the right internal machine.

Well, that Wikipedia article implies that sometimes it isn't: "NAT must alter higher level information such as TCP/UDP ports in outgoing communications and must maintain a translation table so that return packets can be correctly translated back. RFC 2663 uses the term NAPT (network address and port translation). Other names for this type of NAT include PAT (port address translation), IP masquerading and NAT Overload. Since this is the most common type of NAT it is often referred to simply as NAT." Saying it is "the most common type of NAT" implies there are other kinds. –  QuantumMechanic Apr 5 '11 at 17:57

You don't usually deal with NAT in your applications directly (unless you're building something like a router firmware). Your network equipment usually does it for you, it's transparent to the programmer. Otherwise, Quantum's answer is what you're looking for if you just want to learn about NAT.

Well, it's not always transparent to the programmer. Some applications are directly impacted by NAT (see the "Applications Affected by NAT" section in that Wikipedia article). But to be fair, you're certainly right the vast majority of the time. –  QuantumMechanic Apr 5 '11 at 18:00
