We're exporting SQL Server data to XML, for subsequent import into Access 2010 by a third party.

The VB.NET code runs a SQL Stored procedure, which runs a number of queries. It gets a DataSet back, full of DataTables, and we're writing it out to an XML file with

DataSet.WriteXml(myFileStream, XmlWriteMode.WriteSchema)

Now, that all works fine.

However, looking at the schema, it seems that for all the text fields, MaxLength is set by default to -1.

So when the XML is imported into Access, some of the long text fields end up truncated, because with no maximum column size set, they all default to a field type of Text, which has a 255 character max.

I have a rather nasty workaround...

  • write a separate XSD file, instead of an inline Schema
  • write out the XML without the schema (XmlWriteMode.IgnoreSchema)
  • manually edit the XSD (VS2008), setting the long fields to something big enough
  • import the edited XSD into Access, structure only
  • import the XML into the new structure

This works fine, but it's a bit manual - and the process is going to have to be repeated quite frequently.

So...

Can I somehow set the MaxLength property to default to something other than -1 at output time?

Edit:

Just to clarify... this will be a feature of a number of different implementations, so the content of each XML export (and hence the XSD) will be different each time. I'm looking for an easy way of setting the default text field size without writing a load of code to generate the XSD for each one. Or am I just being seduced by the ease with which the default XSD can be generated by ds.WriteXML?

The structure of the dataset returned by the stored procedure is fixed? Same tables, same columns? –  manji Apr 9 '11 at 12:35
    
@manji: no, it'll be different in every implementation, sadly. I haven't looked yet, but I'm guessing I could programmatically get at the XSD and manipulate it, but with ds.WriteXML so easy, I really wanted to avoid having to do a lot more work. –  ChrisA Apr 9 '11 at 13:11
