I have a login mechanism consisting of a JSF page + managed bean + EJB, it works fine but the only bug is that i don't see the error message when the password is entered wrong. Any ideas?

When the password is entered wrong this is what i get in the browser:

I can avoid this if i don't throw a ValidationException at the catch in the EJB(See EJB code below) but then i don't see any validation message in the form at all when the password is entered wrong.

Here in the EJB i think i make a mistake if i throw the ValidationException in the catch block, because i think displaying error messages at the front end should be a task for the managed bean. I dont understand why the form does not display the error as it does when the fields are empty when the password is wrong(When the email is wrong it displays correctly the validation message).

Changed the saveUserState() method at the EJB to:

You should not throw the JSF ValidatorException inside an EJB method, but inside a JSF validate() method.

I'm not sure what went wrong in the EJB which caused this exception, probably getSingleResult() didn't return a single result at all (thus zero or many). You need to change/handle this accordingly, either by using getResultList() or revising your datamodel why the user doesn't have a single role. I think you just need getResultList() because you're apparently allowing a null outcome.

I use now getResultsList() and i also checked what is returned from the query.There is only one instance of Role returned. The validate method already throw the Validation exception when authentificationEJB.checkCredentials(emailInput, passwordInput) is evaluated to false. I dont understand where is the bug. My data model i think is ok. I have 3 users(Buyer,Seller and Administrator), each of them has a oneToOne relationship with Role. The role entity holds the variables email and password. P.S(When i check the credentials the query only access the Role entity) –  sfrj Apr 13 '11 at 17:10
    
It was just a guess. The answer is in the catched exception which you ignored by throwing a ValidatorException. You need to log the catched exception to learn about the cause. If you can handle it, do it. If you can't handle it, rethrow it as some general/business runtime exception or something. –  BalusC Apr 13 '11 at 17:30
    
I think we are misunderstanding each other. What exactly is the problem you have now? Edit: your updated checkCredentials() will throw an exception when there is no single result. You need to replace it all by return checkEmailExists.getResultList().size() == 1; –  BalusC Apr 13 '11 at 17:34
    
The exact problem now is that the login does not display validation error when wrong credentials. I did modified the method saveUserState() and also checkUserCredentials() but i think the error is not there. I think the problem is in the managed bean where for some reason the error dont gets logged when this validates to true: if (authentificationEJB.checkCredentials(emailInput, passwordInput) –  sfrj Apr 13 '11 at 17:38
    
There is no exception, im sure that the size of the returned list is always 1(See update). Also im sure there are no duplicates in the database i just checked. –  sfrj Apr 13 '11 at 17:44
