I'm new to socket programming and I have this client that tries to connect to a server on the same computer. But the server hangs there after bind or accept—cause bind seems to be right but no output. I know that the server works because another client can connect just fine and the client seems to have done that. What causes the server to not see this incoming connection? I'm at the end of my wits here.

And I haven't been used to programming on Mac, so thank you so much for your patience if I have made some foolish mistakes.

This may be unrelated.... but it won't fit in a comment...

In your server you do this:

In your client you do this:

It's a bit hard to follow because of your variable names, but it looks like your client is working under the assumption that your server will send back a response for every chunk of data received, which isn't the case. You server doesn't appear to have changed the accepted socket to non-blocking, so it's going to block on the read call until there is some data to read (it's never going to get 0)...

Are you sure it's failing before this point? Do you have some sample output?

Aso, in your call to accept, you pass addrlen...

 int addrlen = sizeof(struct sockaddr);  

I think this should be:

 int addrlen = sizeof(struct sockaddr_in);   /* sizeof(client_addr) */

first of all,thank you so much.The codes above are sample code in a book called linux network programming.I made some changes to it and it has not been finished.So i haven't focus on the part of the server ending up with getting a 0, cause i haven't seen any response of their connection.I'm also not sure of where is the problem, for Xcode is really new to me.Restarting my mac or re-opening my Xcode will make some differences. –  cherry Apr 16 '11 at 10:34
    
and you mentioned that i haven't changed the accepted socket to non-blocking. is that the reason why they can't connect each other?what should i do about that? –  cherry Apr 16 '11 at 10:38
    
@cherry: The sockets being non-blocking isn't why they can't connect to each other no, it just impacts have you interact with the socket. I'm a bit confused as to what your actual problem is :) Do you get the cout messages to say that the bind has been successful, and that the listen has worked? If you add a cout to after the accept, do you get a message at this point? –  forsvarir Apr 18 '11 at 5:07
    
Also, the line if(size = 0) following size = read(s, buffer, 1024); in the client is a classic programming mistake. It should be if (size == 0). –  Matthew Hall Nov 24 '12 at 22:55
