I have a UIImage (on a iphone device from it's hard disk, which never changes and is not writeable to) which I get the raw pixel data using the following code:

    NSUInteger height = CGImageGetHeight(image);

    CGColorSpaceRef colorSpace = CGColorSpaceCreateDeviceRGB();
    UInt8 * rawData = malloc(height * width * 4);

    int bytesPerPixel = 4;
    int bytesPerRow = bytesPerPixel * width;

    NSUInteger bitsPerComponent = 8;
    CGContextRef context1 = CGBitmapContextCreate(
                                                  rawData, width, height, bitsPerComponent, bytesPerRow, colorSpace,
                                                  kCGImageAlphaPremultipliedLast | kCGBitmapByteOrder32Big
                                                  );
    CGColorSpaceRelease(colorSpace);

    CGContextDrawImage(context1, CGRectMake(0, 0, width, height), image);
    CGContextRelease(context1);
    return rawData;
}

And then get the alpha using:

UInt8 * sRawData = getPixelData(sDrawImage);
UInt8 currentSAlpha = sRawData[(int)(y * (4*CGImageGetWidth(sDrawImage)) + x * 4 + 3)];

The trouble is that this code produces different alpha values every time it is run, but not completely random. If I output the alpha values in a grid I get this one time:

And this the next time:

These are from exactly the same png files on disk, so they should be indentical each time, (the second one is more correct on the left as there should be two triangles of 0s at the left of the "map", but the first one is more correct on the right)

Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

Are you sure you're reading the alpha component? (perhaps the byte order is ARGB instead of RGBA). I'm asking because the color components for pixels whose alpha is zero may appear uninitialized perhaps. –  Julio Gorgé Apr 25 '11 at 23:58
    
@Julio I don't think this is the case because in the centre of the map it reads 255 and the rgb values of the image vary in the centre (there are black and White panels, along with other colours) –  Jonathan. Apr 26 '11 at 0:16

The fact that you are getting different results each time suggests that the memory you are reading from is not always being initialized. As an experiment you might try using calloc() to initialize the memory to 0 and see if that makes a difference. You could also try to print the contents of the other components and see if those vary on different runs. –  Jon Steinmetz Apr 26 '11 at 1:31
