My application has a message-only window that is launched from a newly created thread. The thread function creates the message-only window and runs the message pump. The problem I am having is that the message pump never seems to get the WM_CLOSE message. I've removed error-handling to simplify the posted code. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

WM_CLOSE is sent when Windows asks your app to close the window. When the user clicks the upper right Close button or presses Alt+F4 for example. None of that is going to happen, you called DestroyWindow(). You need to use WM_DESTROY instead. Which is fine, no need to veto the close request.

If I understand correctly, because this is a message-only window (hidden to the user) and DestroyWindow is called from the destructor, there is no need to handle the WM_CLOSE message in WndProc. That still leaves the problem of the PC getting stuck on WaitForSingleObject in the destructor. How do I send a WM_DESTROY message to the window? I thought DestroyWindow did that. – Jim Fell Apr 27 '11 at 13:36
The only other thing that comes to mind is where I use pointers like s_ptInterface->pobjNotifyWindow-> to access public members of a CNotifyWindow class I wrote for this message-only window. Do you think I should make these shared resources static global variables, instead of public class members? I've run into problems in the past with doing that with critical sections. – Jim Fell Apr 27 '11 at 13:39
Okay, I figured it out. Messages are sent using SendMessage. Sending WM_CLOSE by switching out DestroyWindow with SendMessage in the destructor solved the problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! – Jim Fell Apr 27 '11 at 14:45
