I'm trying to have another shot at this because I'd really like to fix this problem. If anyone would like to aid me in solving the problem I'd greatly appreciate it.

  1. Looking at the original backtrace I posted above, you can see that the destructor for this class is being called whilst I don't even construct an object of that type! I'm pretty clueless about this.

  2. If I uncomment the above piece of code (i.e., the plug-in), it no longer crashes my application when the debugger isn't attached. When the debugger is attached it SEG faults ... weird.

  3. Here is the entire hs_err_pid that the JVM crash generates: I really would appreciate the help.

  4. So I'm wondering the gdb is showing a call to ~EmptyNode? When I don't even instantiate an object of this type. I'm very sure of this in-fact.

  5. Why is the problem manifest in a 64-bit of our app and not a 32-bit version ...

I've tried enabling the STL debug macros to see if they would help me in trying to find the cause of this problem but it didn't. The macros are: -D_GLIBCXX_DEBUG -D_GLIBCXX_DEBUG_PEDANTIC.

Original Question:

I think I'm seeing a possible regression in the Sun JVM, but before I go file a bug report with Sun I'd like extra confirmation.

  1. Code that was previously working with jdk1.6.0_21 x64 (64-bit) is now crashing with jdk1.6.0_24+, please see the log below. Note: If I run the same version JVM in 32-bit it does not crash.
  2. I have the following switches enabled. Are there any more that would prove to be useful?



  3. The log below is what happens after the JVM has been created. I've also included the stack trace of the crash. The others threads are created by the JVM because my app is single-threaded.

  4. Are there any debugging tips you could offer me?

I appreciate all the help as I've been trying to fix this all day and I'm running out of ideas.

The crash is happening in the native layer as you can see from the stacktrace above. – bruce.banner Sep 12 '11 at 8:57

This level of analysis is totally sufficient to file a bug / regression report.

Go straight to Oracle for filing this type of problem.

What kind of coding are you doing - does it involve JNI? That looks like a destructor for EmptyNode getting called. – kittylyst Jun 7 '11 at 16:23
Yes, but the code I pasted above does not touch JNI. The JNI calls are in a totally separate part of the code. ~EmptyNode is compiler generated destructor and makes no use of JNI directly. I'll remove all parts of the code that touch is class and see if I get a similar error message --- A call being made to a totally unrelated class.
