As described in "Programming WCF Services" by Juval Lowy, WCF uses two-phase commit protocol (2PC) to manage distributed transactions:

When the transaction ends the transaction manager checks the combined vote of the participating services. If any service or client voted to abort, the transaction is doomed: all the participating resources are instructed to discard the changes made during the transaction.

I tested different resource managers (VRM, sql server, ...) against transactions, but none of them worked correctly. The main problem is that aborting distributed transaction does not rollback changes applied on the resource.

My source is made of two console programs (client and service). Each call to AddValue service operation adds a record (an integer field) to a sql-server db table. Second call to AddValue throws an exception that aborts the distributed transaction.

Run service and then client program. Now watch values3 array (in the client program), it will be {1, 2} that means changes are not rolled-back.

My second question is that how DTC calls RM to rollback changes in the case of transaction abort? Consider cases that RM lifecycle is relied on service lifecycle. Does LTM or something else save a reference to resource until distributed tranasction ends? What if the resource is unavailable at that time?

Why did you create a two instances of ExerciseClient? A wild guess - this might be the issue. Can't you just use a one instance of the ExerciseClient? –  William May 2 '11 at 17:03
    
The problem was caused in two points: declaring connection as static field, and using two proxies in the same transaction (thanks to william's comment). This is new source. –  Mostafa Tofigh May 2 '11 at 20:14
