I have the following table of rates for given date range.

I want to write a sql query (PostgreSQL) to get the sum of prices for a give period if it's a continuous period..for example:

if I specify 2011-05-02 to 2011-05-09 on the first set the sum of the 6 rows should be returned,

but

if i specify 2011-05-02 to 2011-05-011 on the second set nothing should be returned.

My problem is that I don't know how to determine if a date range is continuous...can you please help? Thanks a lot

case 1: sum expected

   1.0      "2011-05-02"  "2011-05-02"
   2.0      "2011-05-03"  "2011-05-03"

I do not have overlapping rates date ranges.

Why is the first example continuous? The price 5.0 ends at 2011-05-07 and the next ones starts two days later? – a_horse_with_no_name May 5 '11 at 12:14

What if you specify 2011-05-02 to 2011-05-11 on the first set (assuming there are no rows after (4.0 "2011-05-08" "2011-05-09"))? Should it return the same result as for 2011-05-02 to 2011-05-09? – Andriy M May 5 '11 at 13:06

Not sure I understood the question completely, but what about this:

select * 
from prices
where not exists (
  select 1 from (
     select from_date - lag(to_date) over (partition by null order by from_date asc) as days_diff
     from prices
     where from_date >= DATE '2011-05-01' 
       and to_date < DATE '2011-07-01'
  ) t 
  where coalesce(days_diff, 0) > 1
) 
order by from_date

To get the sum of prices:

select sum(price)
from your_table
where .. checking to and from dates ..
having param_dateend - param_datestart = sum(to_date - from_date)

It must however be guaranteed that the periods do not overlap. If they do this query will not return correct results.

You also need to work out the date checks yourself - I am not sure what should happen if your enddate or startdate is in the middle of some record (between to_date and from_date of a record.) The condition in the having clase will need to be changed if you need to include such cases:

having param_dateend - param_datestart = sum(
   case when to_date > param_dateend then param_dateend else to_date end
   - 
   case when from_date < param_datestart then param_datestart else from_date end
)

Thanks a lot...periods do not overlap...it doesn't matter where the end date is as long as it's continuous...i'll give the query a try. – Rob May 5 '11 at 12:57
    
@Rob To give you an example - in your second case you have a period of "2011-05-09" "2011-05-011" what should happen if your enddate is "2011-05-10"? You also could have a period of "2011-05-05" "2011-05-011" in the table and be looking for prices between 2011-05-07 and 2011-05-08? – Jakub May 5 '11 at 13:00

as long as i can get a continuous range of dates that match the given period i'll be ok...i don't have to get the sum(rate)...i can just retrieve the periods...and calculate the rate in my code...my real problem is to figure out a continuous date range... so for example @Jakub brought up...if my enddate is "2011-05-10" and query returns "2011-05-09" "2011-05-011" as part of the result it would be ok. i can write a simple query for the second case...do a between date range check...so that's ok as well...just need someone to help me with a continuous date range problem i am having...thanks guys – Rob May 5 '11 at 13:26

Here's a rather fonky way to solve it :

  HAVING min(start_date) <= '2011-05-02' AND max(end_date)>= '2011-05-09';

I think you need to combine window functions and CTEs:

WITH
raw_rows AS (
SELECT your_table.*,
       lag(to_date) OVER w as prev_date,
       lead(from_date) OVER w as next_date
FROM your_table
WHERE ...
WINDOW w as (ORDER by from_date, to_date)
)
SELECT sum(stuff)
FROM raw_rows
HAVING bool_and(prev_date >= from_date - interval '1 day' AND
                next_date <= to_date + interval '1 day');
