This is the error produced on cmd: d:\UnderTest>javac jProgressBar.java jProgressBar.java:39: local variable ae is accessed from within inner class; needs to be declared fina l action(ae); ^ 1 error

What is this error and how can I solve this error?

needs to be declared final do what it says to do! final ActionEvent ae –  MeBigFatGuy May 10 '11 at 19:22

Declare the variable ae as final:

public void actionPerformed(final ActionEvent ae) {

This means that it cannot be assigned a new value, which should be fine according to your current code.

The compiler requests that variables that are accessed in inner classes be final. That way the value assigned to the reference doesn't change on it and it can make all sorts of optimizations, including throwing away the stack frame. –  sblundy May 10 '11 at 19:27

Probably need to run the pb.setValue(i) on the event dispatcher thread; you can use SwingUtilities.invokeLater() –  fd. May 10 '11 at 19:39

There are some counterproductive issues present.

Swing is single-thread based, and all actions must be done on the EDT. For that reason, your JProgressBar doesn't update correctly. See also Concurrency in Swing.

Don't use Thread.sleep(int) in Swing, and certainly not in an action listener.

By using Runnable, it is possible to update JProgressBar; but as mentioned, the method must be run from invokeLater().

For that, SwingWorker would be better, as shown below and here.
