I've created a sample project by following the instructions of this MSDN Walktrough. I've changed the sample a little bit and created two additional TextBox controls and a button.

I've created a simple model using code first approach and a derived class of DbContext as a code generating item.

After that I've used the Data Sources which were created: enter image description here

The "Name" - TextBox is ReadOnly. I want to allow the user to type in an ID and search for it, when the "Search" - Button is pressed. Thus, the "Name" - TextBox should be updated if the specified ID could be found. I don't care that much about the DataGrids, because I don't need them in my actual code.

I've no idea how I can update the CollectionViewSource and validate the input, because the CollectionViewSource.View.CurrentItem property is read only.

ICollectionView exposes the following methods to set the current item:

  • MoveCurrentToFirst
  • MoveCurrentToLast
  • MoveCurrentToNext
  • MoveCurrentToPrevious
  • MoveCurrentTo(object value)

I typically find the last method the most useful for production code where I want to work with a selected item

        get { return _collectionView.CurrentItem as Department; }
        set { _collectionView.MoveCurrentTo(value); }
    }

It also exposes a CurrentChanged event that you can use to set up a handler to where you can do whatever you need (including validation) to react to the current item being changed.

I could say more about filtering, but I guess your just trying to work through some example code here and getting stuck on how to set the CurrentItem and react to it. Hopefully this will give you some ideas as to how to do that, but feel free to ask more questions if you need to.

| Thanks for your answer. I'm not sure if I need a CollectionView at all. Like I mentioned in a comment at Rachels post, the Tool, I need to create, isn't intended for browsing or even viewing entities. There some kind of an Identifier the user needs to type in. Then I need to verify if a corresponding record exists and if so load that one and allow the user to do some actions with it. I'm getting stuck on if it's generally necessary to use a CollectionView, which was designed to do a lot more. –  0xbadf00d May 28 '11 at 14:28

Your SearchTextBox should be binding to a SearchText field in the ViewModel, not the CurrentItem's Name

Your ViewModel should look like:

ObservableCollection<Courses> { get; set; }
ObservableCollection<Departments> { get; set; }

string SearchText { get; set; }
ICommand SearchCommand { get; }

@Freeze2046 I guess I'm a little unclear as to what you are trying to do. If you want a read-only TextBox you can set the Binding's Mode=OneWay instead of TwoWay –  Rachel May 26 '11 at 15:59
    
Generally, I'm not programming in .NET, but - from time to time - I'm "forced" to create some tools with it. That's why I was a little bit confused, if there is anything in the Framework which is intended to be used for my scenario. The problem is, that all these things are designed for collection views (as their names already suggest). That's not what I need. I'm having a simple visual interface where you can type in a serial number and do something with the related entity. I think the best way to implement this, is to just use an entity object in the view model, which will be assigne –  0xbadf00d May 27 '11 at 6:27
