Im currently developing a Music Player and due to the fact that each time the orientation changes on the Phone and the Activity is re-created, I wanted the music to be played by a service. This way, the user is able to leave the activity without the music stopping.. Now.. I have this weird issue I been unable to solve... Each time I created the Activity and Inflate the GUI, the service is started. But the Service always gets Bounded after the Activity has send the data... So the music never starts... I know this happens because if I add a Button to resend the data, the Music starts playing... Here is my code for the activity:

I hope someone can help, im getting very frustrated with this! Also, Im pretty sure there is no problem with the media player, I tested it before without the service... the cursors also work properly... Thing is... Do I need to necessarily call the service from the GUI for it to play the music?? What am I doing wrong?

Ok, finally found a solution! I read that the interaction with the service is only available once the onCreate method has finished... So, I added a Timer and filled it with the methods I needed to run:

I don't think that your solution is actually fixing the cause. It is a hack which just happens to work. See my answer below to see how you can properly get this to work by calling code at the right point in the service lifecycle. –  Mark Allison Jun 7 '11 at 6:46

What you need to do is to move the code in onCreate() which is dependent on the service being available to your onServiceConnected() method in your ServiceConnection implementation:

I would also look at your service implementation as I cannot understand why you are calling mService = new Messenger(service). Your IBinder instance should provide you with a mechanism for obtaining a reference to your service instance.

But thing is, I need to send different types of data depending of the music to played, it would be perfect if only send data once... Also, if the orientation in the screen changes, the connection is re-made.. Meaning that the service would receive the data again... –  CodeKrieger Jun 7 '11 at 20:59

Maybe you need to consider having a Service that lives longer than your Activity. Unbinding from a Service does not necessarily stop the Service. It is difficult to be more precise or offer thoughts on how best to optimise things when I have no idea of what function your app is trying to fulfil. However your "solution " may result in occasional crashes which are difficult to track down. I would strongly advise familiarising yourself with the Service life-cycle to better understand how to use Services efficiently. –  Mark Allison Jun 8 '11 at 5:32
    
Well... Maybe you just don't get my code... In fact when the activity is destroyed or stopped, it only unbinds from the service... The service lives as long as there is music playing... And I have been testing it thoughtfully and haven't faced any kind of crashes... Anyway, in the meanwhile, it works... I just need to finish the implementation of other functionalities and once that's done I will seek a better solution... Thanks for the advice :D –  CodeKrieger Jun 9 '11 at 4:30
