I have a LOB solution under development that I've been tasked with enhancing to add notification support where any pending notifications will appear when a user signs into the application. The system must support targeting the notifications based on a number of factors including:

  • the user's type (Customer, Vendor, Partner, Contractor or Employee)
  • the user's geographical region (North America, Europe, etc.)
  • the user's locale (State, Province, etc.)
  • for Customers, the user's marketing area
  • for Vendors, the product type(s) they supply
  • and so on (I'm sure you get the point)

My question is how best to model this in my domain layer so that:

  1. I can easily select the targeting when creating a new notification
  2. I can persist the information in the back-end data store
  3. Quickly evaluate the target information against the user's information to determine which notifications to display

(It bears mentioning that at this point we have no notion of a "user" beyond the IPrincipal/IIdentity objects provided by the .NET Framework to represent the authenticated "user".)

Ideally the solution will sit behind a service layer which allows the LOB application to be the client making the request and receiving the list of notifications to display. The logic in my domain layer should handle resolving all of the targeting information when such a request is made.


My initial thoughts are to have a Target domain object that exposes an IsMatch method. I would pass in a UserProfile object that represents the current user with their Type, Region, Locale, etc. defined. However, I have two issues with this:

  1. Because certain metadata is only relevant for certain user types (e.g. only vendors will have a list of product types while customers have marketing areas), I'm not sure how to properly model the user. I.e. should I have a single User(Profile) type with a name/value list of metadata properties or a base User(Profile) class with subtypes of each type?
  2. I thought about having a TargetFactory class that accepts the type of target as a parameter and returns a subclass of Target which implements IsMatch with the specific logic for that type of targeting. For example, if targeting is based on the user's type, then the factory would return a UserTypeTarget object with logic to evaluate the user's type in the IsMatch method. But, I'm stuck figuring out how to represent the list of possible targets to the user and how to support scenarios with multiple targets (e.g. North American Vendors that sell Product X).

Perhaps a more DDD solution would be to have a TargetingService that would expose the IsMatch property but, as I see it, under the hood it would still make use of the same TargetFactory, Target and subtype structure.

Am I on the right track?

Sounds like a lot of design work and nothing that can be answered without a lot of effort. Maybe you can extract more specific questions after having thought this through yourself? –  jpfollenius Jun 11 '11 at 10:24
I agree with the above comment, but would also urge you not to tie your domain model to IPrincipal/IIdentity. Security is not a domain concern. If you separate those concerns you'll probably have an easier time. –  Josh Kodroff Jun 20 '11 at 19:56
