I am fairly new to development on mac os while I am an experienced windows developer. I have been working on a 3D game engine for some time now on Windows and now I want to start porting this engine to mac os.

I have been coding this engine entirely from scratch, and have used third party libraries (which are cross platform) for specific extra's. The ones I use at the moment are:

  • LUA 5.1.4 - for scripting
  • FreeType library - for truetype font support
  • FreeImage library - for supporting all kinds of image file formats

The only windows specific code I have created is the creation of the window itself with an opengl context on it. From then on, everything should be cross platform (except for things like keyboard/mouse/sound/... but I'm not worrying about those atm.)

This all works great in windows, using visual C++ 2008. I have copied the necessary include files in a subdirectory of my source code, along with the necessary .lib files to make the linker aware of the external functions.

Now comes the big question: how does one port this to mac os?

First of all, I know that I can use Cocoa with an NSOpenGLView to create a window. I should then NOT include the windows-specific code to create the opengl contexted window. With the right #ifdef's, this should be fine. I haven't tried this one yet, but I think this will be okay. Same with keyboard/mouse/..., these are cocoa events that I should handle and pass to the cross-platform event handler.

So to get things started, I created my first cocoa application, a window, an opengl view, basic c++ class for opengl, glClearColor, glClear, glFlush - yes it works. Now I want to get lua started, and here, I get stuck: how do I implement the library???

As I said, in windows, I would create a subdirectory in my source code with the necessary include and lib files, I would add both of them to the correct search paths, and I would add a #pragma comment(lib, "lua5.1.lib") line to my source code to make sure that the lua library is linked.

I tried several things already:

  1. I Downloaded the binaries from LUA binaries website: these are include files + liblua5.1.a, liblua5.1.dylib and liblua5.1.so. I managed to add the directories to the build settings and I managed to use the include files. The linker doesn't complain either but when running, the program won't start: gdb says that the app can't find liblua5.1.dylib. I can copy this file to the app's directory, but this is of course not what I want to do. I want this to be a real mac os app, not some kind of weird geek port.
  2. I downloaded lua-framework and put it in my source code directory, dragged it into the Frameworks folder in my XCode project navigator and tried to get it to work. First the header files would not be findable (strange, I would presume that the framework handles this), so I added the path to the search path, then same problem: can't run: gdb says dyld: not loaded, image is not found. So I am having the same problem. Also, I don't like the thought to be forced to add frameworks to my project, but if it is necessary, I will do it of course.

So now I am stuck: how do I handle these things? I presume I will have the same problems with the FreeType library and the FreeImage library.

I think that the problem lies in the fact that I haven't got enough knowledge of how everything is organized on the mac in terms of development. On the other hand, I would like to not have to install stuff on my system to get my code compiled. I want it to have all the necessary files/libraries, ready to compile, when downloaded as a zip for example. So I prefer not to have to copy files to paths like /Library or /Developer or install extra components from 3rd party websites.

By the way, all my code is of course C++. The only Object-C code I want to have to write is the GUI and events.

I am also not interested in using third party cross-platform libraries which should make my life easier. I really want to do all from scratch as I have been successfully doing.

Can anyone help me with this? Please give enough information, I am really very new to the mac and development on it. I am a fast learner though.

Problem solved: it seemed that the library file I downloaded from the lua binaries page was not compatible with my XCode 4.

I have compile lua from source and created a .a file from it. I added this .a file to my project and wazaa... everything worked perfectly.

Static linking is simple: just drag the .a file into the project.

If you want to or need to do dynamic linking, you'll need to tell the executable how to find the dylib at runtime. Copy the dylib file into the app's myApp.app/Contents/MacOS folder. From there use install_name_tool to tell the executable where to find the dylib. You can do both of those as post build steps in Xcode under the target settings.

BTW homebrew is currently the best way on MacOSX to obtain binaries for common open source libraries.

App bundles in OSX are just folders. If you Ctrl-click on any application you can choose 'Show package contents' from the menu, which will open up a Finder window with a folder 'Contents'. From the command line (Applications/Utilities/Terminal), you can cd into the bundle as well: cd (openFrameworks)/apps/mine/myApp/bin/myApp.app/Contents/MacOS. –  damian Jun 15 '11 at 11:58
