I am trying to create a QGraphicsItem that will pull data from a file in a threaded fashion, and display it when the data has been read in. Behold the code:

This will compile fine,but when I try to load an image, i get a whole bunch of X errors, and the program quits:

What am I doing wrong? When I had this set up single-threaded, I was able to do this no problem.

Your image loading code is not thread-safe as QImage is not thread-safe. That should be the reason for your crashes.

You also have leaks, like the QPoint created on the heap and never deleted, in paint(). Just create it on the stack instead of the heap. Same for the image: You leak it, no need to create QImage's on the heap either. (they are implicitely shared so copies are cheap).

Are you sure? I thought QImage was supposed to be thread safe - I switched to it explicitly because I have heard QPixmap is not thread safe. – Derek Jun 13 '11 at 21:29
    
QImage is not thread-safe - it can be used in non-UI threads though (either thread-local, or with external synchronization), while QPixmap can't be used in non-gui threads at all. You could load the image in another thread and then pass the completely loaded image to the main thread. – Frank Osterfeld Jun 13 '11 at 21:32
    
Also - I think since I am trying to only create my QImage once, when it loads the first time, I need to keep it on the heap, not the stack. – Derek Jun 13 '11 at 21:32
    
How would that work exactly? I would still be able to use my current thread to build an image (in the stack), and then pass it back to the main thread which would run drawImage? how do you pass back an object like that in Qt? – Derek Jun 13 '11 at 21:40
