I'm using EF4.1 for the first time (so be patient with me) but I just cant get to grips with how I can add new items to a sub collection of an object and then save the object.

For example, with the classes below, I can initially save the TravelTicket (containing multiple People) into my database, but as soon as I add a new person and then try to save the TravelTicket again I get:

An object with the same key already exists in the ObjectStateManager. The ObjectStateManager cannot track multiple objects with the same key.

Can anyone help?

The call "ticketRepository.InsertOrUpdate(ticket);" on the "Next" method causes the exception:

An object with the same key already exists in the ObjectStateManager. The ObjectStateManager cannot track multiple objects with the same key.

FURTHER EDIT: If I pull the object back from the database after its been saved instead of pulling the object from the session, adding the 2 new persons works OK:

Works: TravelTicket ticket = ticketRepository.Find(ticketId); ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Name = "Peter" }); ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Name = "Paul" }); ticketRepository.InsertOrUpdate(ticket); ticketRepository.Save();

Doesn't Work: TravelTicket ticket = (TravelTicket)Session["Ticket"]; ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Name = "Peter" }); ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Name = "Paul" }); ticketRepository.InsertOrUpdate(ticket); ticketRepository.Save();

Matteo's answer is good advice, you are probably trying to save multiple times with the same context instance so it is trying to track 2 sets of changes to the same entity and fails –  Ben Robinson Jun 21 '11 at 13:36

IN the following function, after you get the ticket from session, what is the Id of that ticket? public ActionResult Next() { TravelTicket ticket = (TravelTicket)Session["Ticket"]; ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Name = "Peter" }); ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Name = "Paul" }); ticketRepository.InsertOrUpdate(ticket); ticketRepository.Save(); return View(); } –  J.W. The Id of the ticket after I retrieve from session is the ID created by the save action in the Index() method. –  FloatLeft Jun 21 '11 at 20:19

I'd need to see the code you are using to add items and then persist them. Until that a few generic advice.

It seems like you're using a long-living context to do your stuff. It's a good practice to use short living context, like this:

  • Instance context
  • Do a single operation
  • Dispose the context

Rinse and repeat for every operation you have to do. While following this good practice, you could be indirectly solving your problem.

In your mapping class for person, you may need do something like this

 Property(p => p.Id)
            .StoreGeneratedPattern = StoreGeneratedPattern.Identity;

modelBuilder.Entity<TravelTicket>().Property(x => x.Id).StoreGeneratedPattern = StoreGeneratedPattern.Identity; base.OnModelCreating(modelBuilder); results in: Error 1 'System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.Configuration.PrimitivePropertyCo‌​nfiguration' does not contain a definition for 'StoreGeneratedPattern' and no extension method 'StoreGeneratedPattern' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.Configuration.PrimitivePropertyConfigurat‌​ion' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) –  FloatLeft Jun 22 '11 at 8:40
    
Looks like .StoreGeneratedPattern is not available in EF4.1 and has been replaced with: modelBuilder.Entity<Person>().Property(x => x.Id).HasDatabaseGeneratedOption(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Identity); However, this doesn't fix the problem. To me it looks like the ObjectStateManager doesn't like the fact that when new People are created they have a default Id of 0. If I change the code in my Controller to: ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Id = 50, Name = "Peter" }); ticket.Members.Add(new Person { Id = 51, Name = "Paul" }); I don't get the exception. –  FloatLeft Jun 22 '11 at 11:09
    
On further investigation it looks like the problem is caused by the fact that I'm passing the TravelTicket in session. If I just pull the object back from the data store using the Find method and then add the Persons, then all works fine. I guess recreating the object from session is also bringing in keys that will be duplicated in the ObjectStateManager when new items are added. –  FloatLeft Jun 22 '11 at 11:29
