I need to make a big modification on a database: I created a new table, and I need to insert in it data from several other tables (read: complicated insert statement, with a select part involving several joins and complicated condiitons). The data volume is huge, some of the tables have around 200 million lines. They have also good indexes.

Problem is: I need to to this task without interrupting the service. So I would like to know if any solution exists in order to launch such a process with a lower priority, so the server can continue to handle its everyday tasks. It doesn't matter if the process takes a longer time.

i would think ....

  1. setup a slave
  2. when you are about to doing the insertion, stop the slave
  3. perform the insertion at the slave
  4. after the new table table are inserted successfully, resume the slave
  5. scp the new table data-file into master server (since is a new table, and no-one will require read/write from/to it)

From the MySQL manual: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/insert.html

    [INTO] tbl_name [(col_name,...)]
    {VALUES | VALUE} ({expr | DEFAULT},...),(...),...
        [, col_name=expr] ... ]

Use the keyword LOW_PRIORITY for your inserts and updates.

Actually, that's not really a solution in my case. The only thing LOW_PRIORITY does is waiting until no client is reading from the table you want to insert into before doing so, and I want to insert in a new table, which will logically be ununsed by any process except the insert. What I would need is a way to lower the priority of the insert process to let the other (production) processes go smoothly. –  Alexis Dufrenoy Jun 23 '11 at 14:46
