I'm responsible for maintaining a collection of DLLs and one OCX component. The software is used by our customers to retrieve data from our server. The OCX is basically a simplified wrapper around the DLLs and does the data marshalling.

I upgraded the OCX and DLLs from VC4, VC6 to VS2008, which was relatively painless. However, the result is that the performance is cut in half. I can now only retrieve data at a rate of around 3,5 MB/s whereas before it was around 6 MB/s.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause such a performance drop using a newer compiler? The same is true when using VS2010.

Any suggestions or pointers to where I should further investigate is very much appreciated!

Some additional information:

  • All DLLs/OCX use MFC, no STL libraries
  • The OCX uses dispinterface (IDispatch::Invoke) for data object delivery
  • Access to the actual data in the data object is provided with a dual interface

I've already tried the following:

  • using _SECURE_SCL=0;_HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING=0
  • using LFH (Low Fragmentation Heap) on the default process heap
  • checked all compiler/linker flags, specifically optimization flags.

I profiled the code. The part that needs most cycles is when the data is retrieved with GetValue(BSTR* retVal). However, the code has not been changed since upgrading from VC6 to VS2008, so the question remains: Why is it so much slower when compiling with a new compiler?

Note: this code won't compile and may contain errors. I reduced it to the method where the performance hit is occuring.

I suggest to profile it to find out where the actual performance issues are and then ask specific questions about those parts. –  Georg Fritzsche Jul 5 '11 at 20:53
    
I found out that if I remove the TRY_DUAL(IID_Data) and CATCH_ALL_DUAL macros, the performance will increase about 20%. Still not enough, but at least something. –  Philippe Baur Jul 6 '11 at 14:27
