For my component based entities I have a dictionary of attributes shared amongst all components... things like position, velocity, health, etc. I'm having a problem notifying the components when attributes are changed but only with non intrinsic types...

See this example:

public class AttributeVector2D extends Attribute
    protected var _value : Vector2D;

    public function get value() : Vector2D { return _value; }
    public function set value(data : Vector2D) : void { _value = data; _owner.attributeChanged(_id); }

    public function AttributeVector2D() : void

        _value = new Vector2D(0, 0);

(There's no templates / generics in Flash so I know this would be a lot prettier with them)

The problem is that if you just do.... value.x = 320, that's using the getter property instead of the setter property and the owner is never notified of the change. This is only a problem with non intrinsic types.

Besides changing it so you have to duplicate functionality like setX() and setY() and setXY() (which the Vector2D class already defines), is there another cleaner solution?

I would change the title of this post to avoid using the word "notify" which I think implies that we're talking about messaging or event models. This question is really just about dealing value types returned by properties. Also, I think "value type" is more commonly understood than "non-intrinsic type." – Paul Wheeler Jul 7 '11 at 3:17

And yeah, I would generally think that intrinsic types would be "built in" types like integers and floats and things. I was just really confused. – Paul Wheeler Jul 7 '11 at 3:37
Might be showing my age here, but I've heard the term "primitive" types used to describe those types as well (int, float, bool, ...) – mikemanne Jul 7 '11 at 17:38

There are two clean solutions for this: either have your implementation of Vector2D immutable, or have it's own notification of changes to it's attributes. If Vector2D is immutable (and probably a value type, i.e. struct), then in order to modify it you must call the setter with something like myObj.Position = new Vector(124, myObj.Position.Y). This has the obvious disadvantage of being a nuisance, but the advantages of reusing all Vector2D's functionality (example: myObj.Position = myObj.Position.dotProduct(anotherVector)). The other is to have Vector2D implement it's own notification. If Vector2D can notify other objects when it is modified, then you simply register to receive notification whenever your setter is called with a non-null value. Neither of these will work if you don't own Vector2D and thus cannot tailor it to your needs, in which case you should make a copy of Vector2D when someone retrieves the value, and document that they must call the setter in order to modify it. This is ugly, but it's the way it is.
