I have a datagrid in my vb.net 4.0 wpf project. I have seen many examples in XAML on how to bind a DataGridComboBoxColumn however I need to do this in code as I have auto-generating columns. I switch the datagridbinding source to multiple data sets.

Inside some of these custom classes are a couple lists. I can get text and checkboxes to auto-generate correctly. When it comes across my array (I have tried many different kinds) I just see a textboxcolumn with the words (Collection) in it.

For instance - One screen I am grabbing system information on WMI calls. One of the calls returns all IP addresses on the server (We can have up to 8 IP addresses) I do not want a column per IP address. I would like to include a list of those into the datagrid so you can drop down and see them.

Any suggestions on if this is possible or if I am doing something wrong?

Not sure if I am understanding perfectly but if you can live with AutoGenerateColumns = False then you can manipulate the columns, their properties and bindings from code like below. So you could use whatever logic you need to in order setup the columns from code. I tried to show how you can source the combobox column items from a different object than the items in the DataGrid as well.

This is meant to be a simple example so I just did everything in the code-behind but from an MVVM standpoint, it depends on your preferred approach but possibility is that you could accomplish the same logic from a controller class that spins up your view models, etc...

Thank you blins, I was hoping there was an easy way for the autogenerate to use an arraylist or list( of string) to easily make a combobox. However I guess it isn't to hard to clear and recreate my columns I want on during the on tab change event. Thank you the code to properly bind the datagridcomboboxcolumn. I may need a little help, your combobox is bound to a local array. My datagrid is bound to an array which is a class with all my needed variables. My class is ServerInfo which contains 15 different strings and one will be this List(Of String) called IP Array. The Datagrid is bound to my ServerInfoArray = List(Of ServerInfo) –  Jasin Jul 12 '11 at 15:21

Notice in my example (as over simplified as it is) I am loading the list items (from the poco object) into an ObservableCollection. ObservableCollection is a special type of generic collection which fires collection changed notification when items are added, removed, etc, which in turn causes bindings to be updated. A plain List will not do this so if you bind your view to a list then the combobox items will not change by simply changing the items in the list (if you use ObservableCollection then they will). –  blins Jul 15 '11 at 12:12
    
You might want to look at the MVVM pattern, using MVVM you could put the column binding logic into the ViewModel and avoid using the code behind of view entirely (maybe overkill for a simple project though). –  blins Jul 15 '11 at 12:21
    
Thanks for replying back, I learned about the ObservableCollection yesterday which I will switch too. I think the Me.ipAddress is throwing me off. You have 2 Classes with the datagrid bound to 1 and the combo column bound to another. I have 1 class with the ip collection as a property in it. The datagrid is bound to this.
