I have a small requirement

I have some data as under

Data
-----
A,B,C
I,J,K
A,D

DDL is as under

Declare @t (Data varchar(50))
Insert into @t Select 'A,B,C' Union all Select 'I,J,K' union all Select 'A,D'
Select * from @t

what I have to do is that (output)

Parent  Child
------- -------
Null    A
Null    I
A       B
A       C
I       J
J       K
A       D

My approach so far is as under but not working

Just want to check, which is the best way considering performance. I have checked and seems like cross apply and split function seems to be a better option for performance. –  suryakiran Jul 11 '11 at 12:34
    
@suryakiran - I have not done any performance testing on this. I don't think that splitting a string like this is something that should be done very often. Perhaps only when you need to fix a bad db design by normalizing the database structure. –  Mikael Eriksson Jul 11 '11 at 12:52
    
I would suggest to in db design as table grows this will not give the optimistic output. –  Yogesh Bhadauirya Jul 11 '11 at 13:31

You can use the below select query for the requirement

SELECT DISTINCT b.Item AS Child,
CASE WHEN 
CHARINDEX(b.Item,a.Data)=1 
THEN null 
ELSE SUBSTRING(a.data, 1,CHARINDEX(',',a.data)-1) END AS Parent  FROM @t a CROSS APPLY dbo.split(a.Data,',') b

For this purpose you need to have a user defined Split function which returns table variable

 @delimiter VARCHAR(10)

RETURNS @IDTable TABLE (ID INT IDENTITY(1,1),Item VARCHAR(500))

 SET @tempItemList = REPLACE (@tempItemList, @delimiter + ' ', @delimiter)  
 SET @i = CHARINDEX(@delimiter, @tempItemList)   

 WHILE (LEN(@tempItemList) > 0)  
 BEGIN  
  IF @i = 0  
   SET @Item = @tempItemList  
  ELSE  
   SET @Item = LEFT(@tempItemList, @i -1)  

  INSERT INTO @IDTable(Item) VALUES(@Item)  

  IF @i = 0  
   SET @tempItemList = ''  
  ELSE  
   SET @tempItemList = RIGHT(@tempItemList, LEN(@tempItemList) - (@i + LEN(@delimiter)-1))

I would rather suggest to make the required table structure changed if possible, keeping in view of performance.
