I am working on a game with multiple levels. The initial level runs fine not matter if I start with Level 1 or Level 2. Within the code the next level is loaded based off a user's score. I am using a game state manager to dealloc the initial level and load the next level. In IOS 4.2 this code runs without error. However, in IOS 4.3.3 I get a EXC_BAD_ACCESS error when the glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT) line is called in the Rendder method of the next level.

  • I do not have any zombies
  • Analyze does not return any changes
  • I do not see any memory leaks in Instruments

Other posts suggested that I put glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, 0) and glBindBuffer(GL_ELEMENT_ARRAY_BUFFER, 0) at the end of my Render method, but I get the same EXC_BAD_ACCESS error. I am sure that I am access bad memory, but what OpenGL calls need to be made to load my new level w/o error?

Render method is the same for both levels:

If you're getting an EXC_BAD_ACCESS on the first thing you're trying to do in the scene (glClear()), it might be something to do with your context. Where are you using -setCurrentContext: here? Are you trying to access that context from a different thread? –  Brad Larson Jul 21 '11 at 18:38

Brad, you gave me the lead I needed. Thanks! I had to do the following to get my levels to work with each other. When level one is complete and before level two loads I had to: - purge all of my textures - release my gles_context object - re setup my 2D gles_contect object I believe that I was referring to a context on a different thread. These steps ensure that I do not do that. There may be a more efficient way of doing this other than re-creating all of my objects. –  jlefty38 Jul 22 '11 at 2:22
    
You don't need to toss out your context and objects when shifting to another thread. Simply use -setCurrentContext: on the new thread before you start doing any OpenGL ES actions on that thread, and make sure that only one thread at a time will access that context using locks or (even better) a single-wide GCD queue. –  Brad Larson Jul 22 '11 at 14:40
