To be honest, I'm not sure if this is an issue with my code or with settings in the database, but i'm hoping that someone can still attempt to solve this problem with me.

So, i've got a simple program that, for the time being, is just connecting to a simple remote mySQL database set up through WAMP and printing out the first username in the table.

The issue that i'm having is as follows (note - i know it says SQL Server on the first line, this is because it was hard-coded into the VB program as the first line displayed):

Error while connecting to SQL Server.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to 
SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name 
is correct and that SQLServer is configured to allow remote connections. 

(provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
  • The server is set up on IP address:

  • I already commented out the "Bind-Address..."

  • I created 2 database users; one set for localhost as host and the other set for % as host.

  • Username and password are very basic (they're: username//password)!

If anyone can give some insight as to what is going wrong, I will work with you from there.



I just realized that the SQL connection works with out FTP server when running it locally on the server, but when run from a remote computer, it gives a similar issue as below, so i'm starting to lean more towards it being an issue the MySQL configuration possible?

used Neil's advice and switched SQLConnection to Odbc.OdbcConnection. it produced the following error:

ERROR [IM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

@james_bond - Because WAMP uses MySQL as far as I know. I was just going by what WAMP displayed it as. Also, the top line is hard-coded as "SQL Server", please disregard it. – Jason Jul 21 '11 at 22:30

You have to use the MysqlConnector. SqlConnection is for SQL Server.

Just noticed it was a link and not a highlight. But I need something that can allow my program to stay as a stand-alone executable, which is why I was writing this in the first place. I don't want my program to have to rely on 200 other programs that need to be downloaded / installed on every computer MY program gets run on. – Jason Jul 21 '11 at 23:08
@Jason : if you want to connect to mySQL you NEED a Driver. If you want to use ODBC you need myODBC if you want to use fully-managed ADO.NET than download mySQL Connector. Without this you want able to connect to mySQL! – 2GDev Jul 22 '11 at 10:57

SqlConnection only connects to MS SQL Server. To connect to MySql you need to use OdbcConnection or MySql's adapter.

The thing is, that I want to be able to distribute this as a stand-alone executable when i'm finished with it, I don't want it to have to require a bunch of other stuff to have to be pre-installed on the other computers. does OdbcConnection require a plug-in? – Jason Jul 21 '11 at 22:33

Sorry, I should have suggested OleDbConnection rather than OdbcConnection, but you'll still need to add Provider=MySQLProv to your connection string, which you don't need to do for MySqlConnection. – Neil Jul 21 '11 at 23:08
@Jason : if you want a stand-alone executable without other stuff, why you use mySQL? if this is a remote Database than you don't need to include the driver on you distribution, if the executable work offline than you have to distribute mySQL too! I don't understand your goal.. – 2GDev Jul 22 '11 at 11:03
