First, within the Program.Program() static constructor I have this code:

AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException += (s, eargs) =>
    LogException((Exception)eargs.ExceptionObject);
Application.ThreadException +=
    (s, eargs) => LogException(eargs.Exception);

Then, if I deliberately do (for example) a divide-by-zero, it's caught. However, none of the other exceptions from within the thread loop are caught, like this one - its stack trace is:

When that ReflectPropertyDescriptor calls my code and I throw a custom exception, the system silently swallows it and I can't log it.

Are you running this on a 64-bit operating system? Does it bomb when you start it with Ctrl+F5? –  Hans Passant Jul 22 '11 at 21:27

No, it doesn't fail when running without debugging. Exceptions are thrown internally, but none of them are unhandled. –  Reinderien Jul 22 '11 at 21:29
    
It is a well known problem, an unpleasant interaction between the debugger and Windows that they can't figure out how to fix. Project + Properties, Compile tab, Platform Target = x86 to work around it. Leaving the setting unchanged for the Release build is fine. –  Hans Passant Jul 22 '11 at 22:07

It turns out that the majority of my lost exceptions can be seen in the BindingComplete event. It'll have to do.
