I'm having an awfully hard time with Yahoo's authentication/authorization. I've enabled BOSS in my account, set up a payment method, and now I'm trying to run a search using some python code:

I keep getting a urllib2.HTTPError: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized exception. I can't figure out whether there's something wrong with my key, or the method of signing, or if I'm somehow tampering with my data after signing, or what the deal is. Anyone have suggestions?

I made some small changes to make your example work. See code for comments.

By taking urllib out of the loop, this unfortunately won't use urllib's proxy-detection mechanism. I haven't been able to get httplib2's proxy settings to work with my firewall. –  Ken Williams Aug 12 '11 at 14:55

So I decided to ditch Python and try Perl, and it Just Worked. Here's a minimal code sample:

Here's another solution, this time back in python-land. This was put together by Tom De Smedt, author of the Pattern web-mining kit.

I'll communicate with the author of python-oauth2 to see if it can be fixed.

I can't seem to get this to work for queries that include spaces. For example, try q = "cats " Any suggestions would be appreciated. –  gleitz Aug 21 '11 at 23:33
    
base += oauth_encode("&".join(["%s=%s" % (k, v) for k, v in sorted(data.items())])) does not yield a valid part of the signature base string when any of k or v contain characters that need percentage encoding. If I am not mistaken according to the specs you would have to: 1. encode all key/values in data to utf8 2. Concatenate its ordered encoded key/value pairs into a query string k1=v1&k2=kv... 3. Percentage encode the resulting string. The oauth2 module in the original post actually gets this right - the issue there is another one. –  OG Dude Oct 7 '11 at 22:38

I stepped into the urllib2.open code using the debugger, and found that the response has this header:

WWW-Authenticate: OAuth oauth_problem="version_rejected", realm="yahooapis.com"

So I guess I'm having some kind of version mismatch of OAuth.

I think this was a red herring. Fiddling around with the oauth_version argument didn't improve matters; furthermore the Y-BOSS docs say to use 1.0, so I don't know what that error's supposed to mean. –  Ken Williams Jul 26 '11 at 21:32
