I'm running ArchLinux, and recently run into this weird problem. After some time, connecting to Google will time out because my system keeps sending a RST packet on receiving SYN/ACK packet from the server. It is the same with other IPs and port numbers of Google. It also happens with yahoo.com.

This never happened before. I think there may be something wrong with my system, but I don't remember I have changed the system config recently.

This happened again and I got the following tcpdump output as sugguested by skjaidev:

You could post simple packet traces that'd give more details. Run this as root and post the output here: tcpdump -i <interface> "ip host <dest_ip>". For example: tcpdump -i eth0 "ip host 192.168.1.1". –  jman Jul 24 '11 at 22:14

Notice how the source ports, sequence number, etc. are same in these two packets?

You can't reuse source-ports that quick. There is something going on with your machine. Looks like your TCP stack isn't seeing any packets from the server, something else is generating the RSTs. Either you have iptable rules or there could be checksum errors, a full packet capture (use -s 0 -w foo.pcap and analyze the trace in wireshark) should show you any checksum errors.

I have seen them in wireshark, and it shows no errors. Also, I have no iptable rules. –  lilydjwg Aug 1 '11 at 6:16

Its definitely SYN retransmissions (see SYN packets with source port 53894 at time 13:44:15.737180, 13:44:18.738936, 13:44:24.752266 and 13:44:36.765603). The exponential timeout indicates SYN re-tx. SYNACKs aren't getting through to the TCP stack, so there is some error in the response packet. –  jman Aug 1 '11 at 6:20
    
But how can I know what is the error, or what caused the error? It shall not be some random events, as it happens several times and only a reboot can fix it. I guess it is related to the uptime or hibernation? –  lilydjwg Aug 1 '11 at 6:29

I finally find a solution for this---disabling TCP timestamps (sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps=0) solves the problem for me. The timestamps for those packets seem invalid somehow.

Your clock is most likely drifting. Setup NTPD to be more aggressive in updating your system time so that you will always be more accurate. Especially if your system goes into hibernation often. The clock will always fall off time.

I have ntpd running and I never observe errors. And forgot to say that the problem happened only with a perticular network (when I moved and connected to another network, it just worked). I don't have access to a network where the problem happens now. –  lilydjwg Apr 26 '13 at 2:38
