I wanted to play around with my Total_Sales table. This is how the data looks like (using SQL Server 2008 R2)

The SQL query I want to create should display the data like this:

To copy the prior month I am using this: Copy prior month value and insert into new row

The NULL in Prev_Month is to show that the start of the Total_Sales was in year 2011 month 1, so no prior data for this example.

I am planning to use a parameter, where you select a month.

You could make the aggregations in Reporting services instead of SQL. Get both year data and use report functions –  niktrs Aug 3 '11 at 11:04
    
That´s what I was thinking, but wouldn´t it be easier to create the query for one dataset? The problem I am running into is the Last_12_Month_AVG. –  AceAlfred Aug 3 '11 at 11:14

The Average isn't the value divided by 12, as there are not always 12 months worth of data in the preceding year. But the AVG() function takes care of that for you.

Also, I'd highly reccomend against using YEAR and MONTH fields. Instead I would recommend using a DATETIME field to represent the "Month Start" and using SQL Server's Date functions...

Last Month : MonthStart = DATEADD(MONTH, -1, ThisMonth)
A Year Ago : MonthStart = DATEADD(YEAR,  -1, ThisMonth)
Last Year  : MonthStart > DATEADD(YEAR,  -1, ThisMonth) AND MonthStart <= ThisMonth

Question for the Last_12_Months_AVG. Will this show the values only for where there are 12 months available and display null/zero for where there is insufficient months? –  AceAlfred Aug 3 '11 at 12:04
    
As formed, each sales value is either supplied to the AVG function, or replaced with NULL and then supplied to the AVG function. (The CASE doesn't have an ELSE, but this defaults to returning NULL in an implicit ELSE statement.) The AVG() function then ignores all NULLs (So the average of 2,NULL is still 2). If all the values supplied to AVG() are NULL, the result is NULL - But at present the code includes "this month" as part of the average, and so it always has atleast One real value to work with. –  MatBailie Aug 3 '11 at 12:14
    
One problem I have run into, maybe you know a quick fix? When a employee has not booked his sales for a previous month there is no data to display for this individual. Is there a way to add a row with the missing employee, where the "sales" is set to 0 and still pull the data for the other rows? Ex. Year 2012 -- Month 1 -- Name Alfred -- Sales 0 -- Prev 500 etc. –  AceAlfred Aug 5 '11 at 10:41
    
Create another CTE before the current one. In there CROSS JOIN all your agents with all the months you are interested in, then LEFT JOIN all of your data nodes populated. Then use that CTE in place of yearly_sales in the sales CTE. Alternatively, fix the output in your client. Which is normally much more advisable, in my opinion. –  MatBailie Aug 5 '11 at 11:14

One approach is to "fix" your data, ensuring it always has values in it. I'd recommend doing that in whatever system is populating your data. Or as a nightly batch that checks for people that didn't enter their data and sticks in 0's for you (To be updated if/when the real data arrives). But if you can't...
