I am implementing a basic chat server on Java. Actually I finished basic things and trying to improve it.

Now I wanna trying on making a list which shows who is online. I have a problem. I get string on JTextPane component and when I press "ENTER" it sends the message but the text cursor goes to lower line. I use setCaretPosition(0); but it didn't work.

So I guess I must implement the list in server.java but the problem is how can I pass the list and use it in client.java. and here is my client code:

One way to implement this would be to implement some event that contains a list of usernames that is sent to all users every time a user connects/disconnects. To keep things simple you could also take a page out of the FTP implementation and use two channels per user - one for the text and another for system commands.

Either way you should basically just serialize the event containing all the necessary information and send that to all clients. Those then basically only have to deserialize it, check what kind of event they have and handle it accordingly. That way you let the Java Serialization API handle all the complicated work - though you can also define your own protocol and use protobuf or something (more efficient; more work).

well i started network subject on java nearly 10 days ago. so i am a little beginner about network : ). i dont know how taking a page out of FTP and i didnt understand two channels situation even if use two channels i guess i must pass the list to clients GUI code. anyway i guess i must improve myself more in network... :) but thanks anyway –  quartaela Sep 3 '11 at 20:53
    
The FTP part was just about the FTP protocol that's using two channels (sockets if you want), you don't have to do it that way. And yes you still have to pass the list to the user - that's what the second paragraph is about. Serialize list -> send to all users -> deserialize -> use list. The event approach just allows you to add other events later on. –  Voo Sep 3 '11 at 21:18

This is due to the fact that you clear the textfield inside the listeners keyPressed method. Thus the key event is still present and the text (in this case a newline) is added afterwards. The quick-and-dirty workaround is to add a evt.consume(); just before your call to write().
