The function below should be replacing characters found in s with spaces if they are found in toBlank:

    blank("abcdef", "bde");
}

The problem is, s is never being modified. Can someone explain what's happening?

Please describe "not working" in more details (by editing your question), and pick a better title - this is about replacing things in a string, not comparing strings. –  Mat Sep 4 '11 at 10:18

You're passing a string literal (which is effectively const) as your first parameter, and you then try to modify it within the function.

Do this instead:

int main(void)
{
    char s[] = "abcdef";

    blank(s, "bde");

    return 0;
}

I think you need to iterate over the characters in toBlank.

void blank(char *s, const char *toBlank)
{
    int i=0, j;
    while (s[i] != '\0')
    {
        j = 0;
        while(toBlank[j] != '\0')
        {
          if (s[i] == toBlank[j])
          {
              s[i] = ' ';
              break;
          }
          else
          {
              ++j;
          }
        }
        ++i;
    }
    printf("%s", s);
}

+1: Your diagnosis of 'mishandled loop conditions' is accurate. The inner loop can be reduced to: for (int j = 0; toBlank[j] != '\0'; j++) { if (s[i] == toBlank[j]) { s[i] = ' '; break; } } which is 8 lines maximum compared with 13 in your answer. It could also be changed to: if (strchr(toBlank, s[i]) != 0) s[i] = ' '; for more dramatic saving. Indeed, the whole body of the function could be: for (int i = 0; s[i] != '\0'; i++) { if (strchr(toBlank, s[i]) != 0) s[i] = ' '; } printf("%s\n", s); for 6 lines in total. –  Jonathan Leffler Sep 4 '11 at 16:03

don't you want the j++ inside the if and not the else? I thought you progress when you find the char
