I found a snippet online for showing a download's progress. The error I'm getting is android.view.ViewRoot$CalledFromWrongThreadException: Only the original thread that created a view hierarchy can touch its views. My goal is to have the phone download a file and then when completed, switch to the chaptermenu intent

You are trying to update the progress from worker(or background thread) where it doesnot get reference to your views. It has to be done on UI thread.
Try using AsynTask , makes life easier with threads.

if you want to stick with normal threads, Check this code,

You might have to use messageHandler to send message to progressbar, and then update.

One easier way to do this is to use runOnUIThread(Runnable) function. This is a function of Activity class for updating UI. I find using it more convenient than creating handlers/messages for communicating with UI thread. Your code can be changed to (I have not test yet!):

public void updateProgress(int downloadedSize, int totalSize) {
runOnUiThread(new Runnable() {
    public void run() {
        int percentage = downloadedSize / totalSize * 100;
        String stringy = "Download Progress: " + percentage + "%";
    TextView textytext = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.downloadscreentextview);
    textytext.setText(stringy);
}});
}

Worked like a charm! thanks so much! how would i be able to create a folder on the sdcard and have multiple files downloaded into it using this code to calculate total progress? –  BretzelPretzel Sep 5 '11 at 16:05
    
I do not really get your question. I think you can just have a background thread doing SDCard I/O and update UI thread the task completes using runOnUiThread. Let me know if I get your point wrongly. –  Billy Pham Sep 6 '11 at 4:01
    
Sorry I figured that out...silly question. One problem I've found..not sure if what's causing it, but when i use your method, the progress updater goes from 0 straight to 100%.....any ideas? –  BretzelPretzel Sep 8 '11 at 22:49
    
i think the problem is that it is requiring me to make downloadedSize and totalSize "final"....that's the only change i had to make from the code you had typed in... any way to get around that? –  BretzelPretzel Sep 8 '11 at 23:13

It is obvious that you should get this type of error as current thread you are running cannot be able to update the GUI.In order to update the gui you have to understand the concept of Handler in android.Please read about Handler in android.
